The Kinesiology, MS program is designed to prepare students for careers in areas associated with kinesiology, physical activity, and sports. Students may contact the graduate coordinator for specific questions about the program and course requirements. Students complete 30 credit hours and choose either an Internship or a Thesis for their capstone project. For the Thesis, students must take KIN 6990 and pass an oral defense before completion of the degree.
Student Learning Outcomes - The graduate with a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the program to:
- Demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving, and independent study skills.
- Demonstrate and apply an understanding of current technology available in their area of expertise.
- Explore interdisciplinary relationships within Kinesiology and associated disciplines.
- Examine the nature and effects of discipline-related skills as they are applied in a professional setting.
Requirements:
The degree program has a minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75(/4.00). The undergraduate degree should be in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related field. If the GPA is deficient, or the undergraduate degree is an alternate discipline, conditional requirements will be enacted.
For applicants who do not meet the 2.75 GPA requirement, the following will be required:
- Statement of Purpose - statement articulating why the prospective student wants to pursue an advanced degree in our program.
- Names of two (2) references - references will be contacted regarding the potential graduate student’s ability to successfully complete the degree.
- GRE - A GRE score is recommended.
For applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related field, the following will be required:
- Prerequisites - at the discretion of the graduate coordinator, prerequisite undergraduate courses may be assigned (e.g., Functional Anatomy, Foundations of Exercise Physiology, Assessment and Evaluation of Fitness and Wellness). Note that while students may be required to take prerequisites, students are fully admitted into the program prior to the completion of prerequisites. Admission is not contingent on the successful completion of prerequisites. Students will enroll in graduate level coursework concurrently with undergraduate prerequisites from their first semester in the program.
International Students:
Regular Academic Student:
- Students in this category apply for the academic degree program, and the English proficiency score provided meets the minimum requirements for enrollment in the program. Students enroll full-time in the academic program upon arrival.
Minimum scores:
- TOEFL exam score of 79 IBT
- IELTS exam score of 6.0
IEP to Degree (IEP to MS):
- Students in this category apply for an academic degree program, however the English proficiency score provided does not meet the minimum requirements. Full-time enrollment in Intensive English classes will be required in the first semester of study, or longer, until the student reaches a level of English proficiency that meets the requirements of the program.
Application Due Dates:
Priority consideration will be given to students who apply at the beginning of the semester prior to the anticipated admissions term. Applicants will be notified of their admission status via an email. Admissions decision will be based upon the merit of the application and the available space in the program.
